I’m checking my cupboard on this one! I love macadamia nuts. Marathon Ventures, Inc. of Bellevue, Nebaska announced on October 31, 2014 that it is voluntarily recalling various retail and bulk packages containing raw macadamia nuts as a precautionary measure because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The affected nuts were sold in several different forms throughout the country after March 11, 2014. See the official FDA notice for detailed information on lot numbers and what to do if you did purchase them.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
