The good news on this FDA notice is that the presence of nuts is clearly marked for those of you with nut allergies. The bad news is that these cashews may be contaminated with Salmonella! As of October 27, 2014, Chetak New York L.L.C. of Edison, NJ is recalling its 5,560 packages of 7oz., 3,840 packages of 14oz., and 1,920 packages of 28oz. “Deep Raw Cashew Pieces” because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
